Stigma, harmful stereotypes, violence, difficulties in finding work or housing are the daily reality of queer people. It is hardly surprising that they are more  <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/information-support\/tips-for-everyday-living\/lgbtiqplus-mental-health\/about-lgbtiqplus-mental-health\/\"><br>  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exposed to<\/span><\/a><br><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/edu.emplomind.co.uk\/5-sposobow-na-walke-z-niskim-poczuciem-wartosci\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low self-esteem<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental problems, such as depression or anxiety disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addictions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-mutilation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/edu.emplomind.co.uk\/czym-sa-mysli-samobojcze-i-jak-sobie-z-nimi-poradzic\/\">Suicidal thoughts<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and even suicide attempts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the report <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/survey-2022\/\">The Trevor Project<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of 2022, 45% of LGBTQIA+ people aged 13-24 have considered suicide. For trans and non-binary people, who are particularly vulnerable to discrimination, the number rises to more than 50%. In contrast, 22% of trans boys and men have attempted suicide, compared to 6% of cis boys and men.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one expects you and your organization to overcome the discrimination against queer people that is so entrenched in our society. However, you can create a safe space in your company and provide an environment for growth and good mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Advantages of an inclusive workplace<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating an inclusive culture for LGBTQIA+ people (and other minorities) has the huge advantage that you are looking out for their safety, comfort and health in your company. However, the perks don&#8217;t end there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inclusivity attracts talent: it is an increasingly important factor for cis and heterosexual people as well, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcg.com\/publications\/2020\/inclusive-cultures-must-follow-new-lgbtq-workforce\">especially<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">millenials and Generation Z &#8211; and these are the people who will make up the majority of the workforce in the near future. According to  <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uschamberfoundation.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Chamber-Inclusion-pressquality-00m.pdf\"><br>  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation report<\/span><br><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2019, <\/span><b>as many as 72% of employees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  would leave their current company for one they consider more inclusive. Whereas <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/focus\/human-capital-trends\/2017\/diversity-and-inclusion-at-the-workplace.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deloitte study<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from 2017 reports that <\/span><b>as many as 80% of people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are looking for an employer that is inclusive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">True inclusivity and diversity also translate into higher retention and profits. The same  <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/focus\/human-capital-trends\/2017\/diversity-and-inclusion-at-the-workplace.html\"><br>  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deloitte study<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports that organizations that demonstrate inclusiveness in recruitment, development or management enjoy <\/span><b>as much as 30% higher revenue<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per employee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uschamberfoundation.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Chamber-Inclusion-pressquality-00m.pdf\">  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other advantages<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are, among others, higher employee and management commitment, as well as a better image and reputation for the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to support employees from the LGBTQIA+ community?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #626eed;\"><strong>Understand the impact of heteronormativity<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be aware that not all your employees are cis and\/or heterosexual. In our culture, this gender identity and sexual orientation is even implicit &#8211; heteronormativity is so ingrained in our culture that we automatically assume it. This approach, however, can be very damaging and alienate queer people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to catch yourself in this automatic thinking and remind yourself that people have different gender identities and sexual orientations. This is where education of the rest of the workforce plays a big role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #626eed;\">Provide knowledge<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure proper training for management, as well as the rest of the staff. A good start would be equality and anti-discrimination training &#8211; offered by such non-profit organizations as  <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kulturarownosci.org\/szkolenia-i-warsztaty\/\"><br>  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Culture of Equality<\/span><\/a>,&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/lambdawarszawa.org\/nasze-dzialania\/?starttabid=1\">Lambda<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or &nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/grupa-stonewall.pl\/szkolenia\/dla-biznesu\/\">Stonewall Group<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can also such training  <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edu.emplomind.co.uk\/demo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carry out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! It is during them that you can learn about inclusive language or being an allied person. Many such organizations also offer audits or support in implementing good practices in the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is worth extending education to include training in communication, empathy or active listening, especially for leaders and managers. These skills are crucial in teamwork &#8211; they help build team effectiveness and good relationships, and facilitate problem solving and conflict resolution.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #626eed;\"><strong>Inclusive psychological support<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">81% of LGBTQIA+ employees &nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bitc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bitc-wellbeing-report-workingwithpride-feb2019.pdf\">have experienced<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health problems &#8211; compared to 60% of all employees. Provide  <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edu.emplomind.co.uk\/demo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inclusive psychological support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which takes into account the experiences of queer people, is incredibly important. Meeting with a therapist or psychologist should be a safe space for them, where they feel understood, their pronouns are respected or the right name is used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professionals should have experience and skills in supporting queer people and be aware of the particular difficulties and challenges that often accompany them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #626eed;\">Create a safe place<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;re talking about an entire organization where queer people will feel comfortable and respected by the rest of the workforce. A simple example of this is the use of a person&#8217;s preferred pronouns. According to the survey <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/survey-2021\/\">The Trevor Project<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of 2021, trans and non-binary people aged 13-24 whose pronouns were respected by those around them attempted suicide 2 times less often than those whose pronouns were not respected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s also, for example, the ability to use a &nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jahonline.org\/article\/S1054-139X(20)30653-4\/fulltext\">bathroom<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consistent with our gender identity or the presence of gender-neutral toilets. Lack of this capability has potential unpleasant consequences for health m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fsoc.2021.652777\/full\">ental<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i &nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/7\/12\/12161210\/transgender-bathroom-survey\">physical<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Increased stress or inflammation of the bladder or kidneys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Safe space&#8221; can also be a dedicated space where queer people can meet and seek support.
