Challenges of a modern leader
The world of work is changing rapidly, and with it the role of a leader. Today, being a manager is not just about delegating tasks and achieving business goals – it is also about taking care of motivation, the mental health of the team and building a culture of openness. During our webinar “Challenges of a modern leader,” we reviewed with participants the biggest difficulties that leaders face and looked for ways to overcome them.
Below we summarize the key issues that came up in the discussion and suggested solutions that you can implement in your organization.
The biggest challenges of today’s leaders
How to motivate employees when we don’t have a budget for raises?
One of the most frequently discussed topics was managing motivation in times of limited resources. Increasingly, leaders are encountering situations where employees openly say, “I’m only motivated by my salary,” and raises are not an option.
What alternatives might there be?
✅ Transparent communication – a frank conversation about the company’s financial capabilities.
✅ Employee appreciation – kudos system, public thanks, extra days off.
✅ Development opportunities – investing in training, mentoring, interesting projects.
✅ Building a sense of influence – involving employees in team decisions.
Motivation is not just about finances. People want to feel that their work matters and that they are appreciated.
Stress and emotion management – how to be authentic but not transfer tension to the team?
Many leaders pointed out the problem of stress and emotions, especially in the context of video conferencing. Some managers admitted that they don’t always feel up to the task of being fully open and smiling, and at the same time don’t want the team to feel their burden.
What can be done?
✅ Lead by example – acknowledging difficult days can help build a culture of openness.
✅ Set boundaries – if you don’t have the strength for the camera, it’s worth communicating this to the team in a simple way: “I’m going to turn the camera off today because I’m having an intense day, but I’m listening to you carefully.”
✅ Regulating emotions – short breaks for breathing, sports, walks can help manage tension.
As a leader, you have the right to have weaker days. The key is how you talk about it and how you take care of yourself so that you don’t transfer the tension to others.
Team conflicts and generational differences
Differences of opinion and difficult situations in a team are unavoidable. A modern leader must be able to manage diverse personalities and generations – from experienced employees to younger generations.
How to deal with conflicts?
✅ Active listening – often the problem is not a difference of opinion, but a lack of space for conversation.
✅ Establishing common values – defining rules for cooperation helps avoid misunderstandings.
✅ Accepting differences – it’s not always worth convincing someone of your point of view, sometimes it’s enough to accept a different perspective.
A leader does not have to be a mediator, but should create a culture of respect and openness.
Stress – the invisible enemy of the leader
Modern management is not only concerned with company performance, but also with the mental health – both of the team and the leader himself. More and more managers are feeling information overload, pressure of responsibility and lack of time for rest.
It is worth remembering that prolonged stress leads to professional burnout, and a leader who does not take care of himself will not be able to effectively support others. Therefore, the key is:
✔ Finding daily space for recovery – even a 10-minute break can work wonders.
✔ Setting boundaries – you don’t have to be available 24/7.
✔ Physical activity and sleep – key elements of stress management.
By taking care of yourself, you set an example for your team and create a culture where mental health is important.
